Saving your animals from parasites by Using Fecal Worm Egg Counts to Determine Deworming Strategy!
Important Update from MidAmerica Ag Research

MidAmerica Ag Research is a "veterinary parasitology diagnostic laboratory," and as such, we receive thousands of fecal samples from many different species of animals from nearly every state in the union on a monthly basis. Also, over the past 36 years, we have had the opportunity to test the efficacy of all FDA approved dewormers currently on the US market, and therefore, feel we are in a unique position to help producers select the most effective product(s) and then help advise them on how and when to use these products at the correct time of the year for all animal species. Remember, however, you still need to seek advice from your local veterinary advisor about our more general recommendations.

When we get questions about how, when and with what products animal owners should use to dewormer their animals for best results, it is hard to help some producers because a number of dewormer products are not universally available everywhere in rural America. Also, in many cases, several products, each from a different class of dewormers, are needed to accomplish the task due to either "parasite resistance" or "incomplete kill" by one or several products, here again, we often run into availability problems. The third issue is that the small producer (those owning one or just a small number of animals) are often forced to buy more product than require because the container size is often built for the large producer.

For these reasons, we have decided to set-up a sister company called NorthAmerica Animal Health (www.northamericaah.com) to provide veterinarians, feed dealers and producers several key deworming products in small dose quantities. The first product we chose is Safe-Guard® (fenbendazole) in a concentrated non-handling formulation. Working with Merck Animal Health, we have created the most concentrated FDA approved OTC form on Safe-Guard® in a non-handling feed-grade product. Rather than buying a pound of Safe-Guard® medicated product for each 1,000 lb. of animal to be treated, we are providing the same amount of product in convenient 4 oz. container of very palatable feed-grade material.

*note: feed-grade safe-guard® is most effective when the dose is spread over 3-5 days in nearly all species animals especially small ruminants, swine, poultry, equine and hoofed wildlife both to make sure everyone gets their dose but also to increase bioavailability to the animals being treated.
